About The Cover Photo
| They say to never judge a book by its cover and yet no matter how hard you try, you inevitably end up making your first impressions based off its design. With Sacramento Fashion Week, the program is by far one of the most important takeaway pieces from the event. It is your guide to the week’s events, the information connecting you to the designers, and also a source of revenue for the event through advertisements.
When brainstorming what the ideal cover would be, we thought about what makes this year for Sac Fashion Week so special. Sac Fashion Week has been around for over four years but this is the first time the event has been produced at this magnitude. It was this growth that inspired the cover’s design. The concept behind the cover is illustrating the emergence of a sketch evolving into the finished masterpiece. We worked with Sac Fashion Week finale designer, Nelly Salogub, to choose the right piece that was going to make the biggest impact. Nelly’s black gown is completely hand sewn and includes floral details made by hand. We worked with Cast Images’ Ashley Jones because we felt that she embodied the youthful essence that characterized the concept of our photo. The final artwork was a combination of dry media and digital art. The strong strokes seen towards the bottom of the gown were produced by acrylic paints and scanned into the computer. Using the iDraw application on the AppleĀ® iPad, we were able to sketch the lines that outline and contour the shape of the dress and make up the floral details at the bottom. The two medias were then merged together digitally to create the final production of the cover.
